Chandler, Arizona – RV to AZ Winter Series

Spread the love

Arizona officially became the 48th state on February 14, 1912. That same year, Dr. Alexander J. Chandler founded a small town just southeast of Phoenix. Naming it after himself, Dr. Chandler had big plans for his little town hoping to create a “jewel in the desert.” Dr. Chandler believed his town could one day become a totally planned community and an oasis in the desert where the rich and famous would flock. The resort remains one of the best examples of integrated Mission Revival design in Arizona.

Dr. Chandler utilized the existing canal systems of the Native Americans as a blueprint, and he transformed dry desert into lush farmland. The Chandler portion of this system is called The Paseo Trail and runs 6.5 miles. Horseback, bicycle, jog, or walk. In fact, at many street corners, horseback riders can activate the flashing beacons for crosswalks without dismounting using a saddle high button on the pole! Whatever your mode of enjoying the winter weather in the Valley of The Sun, this is a great pathway to use. It passes thru parks, stucco housing developments, unique culinary experiences , horse properties, a dairy, and more. With little detours it can include Historical Downtown Chandler.

By far, the most exciting discovery in Chandler is the Arizona Railway Museum that we featured on Roaming With Rosie Episode 10 ! It is fascinating. Operated 100% by volunteers who are also the ones who have painstakingly restored many of the historic trains in the collection. It is dedicated to the railways of Arizona and the Southwest.  Many of them are open for strolling through and will take you back to another time when trains were the modern way to travel long distances. They are only open on weekends all year except summer, but absolutely worth adjusting your schedule to go there.

The downtown is both vibrant and modern, while still quaint and vintage. Mosaic photo plaques adorn the outside of each shop and restaurant, telling the history of that storefront. I find it difficult to choose just one favorite eatery. San Tan Brewing Company ranked high on my list for a pint because of their Mr Pineapple beer and a great patio to relax and watch the world go by.

Most dining spots here feature beautiful outdoor dining year round. The most original restaurant has got to be The Perch. If you’ve always wanted to visit a tropical bird rescue sanctuary while playing games, dining outside, and enjoying unique culinary creations , then The Perch is the place for you. It’s home to over 50 rescue birds. The huge enclosures are adorned with on point humorous signs about how much the birds would enjoy biting your fingers so don’t stick them in the cages.

A good day to visit downtown is Saturday mornings. The Farmers Market takes place in Dr. A.J. Chandler Park smack in the center of everything. You can even participate in Free Yoga sessions there. Just bring your mat and water. The Farmer’s Market is full of fresh grown fruit and veggies, amazing prepared foods, as well as unique local goods and services. I visited with the owner of “Can I Get A Ruff Ruff” pet care. She can care for your pets at your home or RV while you are out and about or overnight when you can’t take Rover with you.

Episode 9 of Roaming With Rosie features our visit with Arizona Queen Bee . When bees are invading your space, Who You Gonna Call? Audra Waddle is a certified Beekeeper who’s mission is to save the bees. She uses a specially designed bee vacuum to remove bees, then transports them to one of her many apiaries where they are given a second chance! And according to her, “they give me this beautiful honey!”. Be sure to look for her and sample some incredible honey creations.

Our final stop in Chandler, is where the city began. Built in 1912, the San Marcos Hotel, now the Crowne Plaza Phoenix Chandler Golf Resort, was originally conceived as a winter getaway for celebrities, dignitaries, and luminaries. Steeped in history, this luxurious, sprawling playground is located in the heart of Chandler’s historic downtown area. Even if you’re you stay in your RV, it’s worth a visit to the stunning lobby to learn about Dr. A.J. Chandler and the history of the area. Check it out on Roaming With Rosie on YouTube S:1 Ep: 11

There is so much to love about visiting Arizona’s Valley of the Sun during the cooler months. And Chandler’s history, culture, entertainment, and range of outdoor activities make this a fantastic place to stay and play! We only touched on some of the great things to see and do.
