So you’ve decided that full time RV Life is how you want to live. You’ve watched numerous RV YouTubers tell you how rewarding it is for them and share with you how they make it work for them. How do you get there?
How did they decide the “When”? We have sat around campfires with Video Creators and Bloggers and participated in late night “Live” YouTube episodes to find out. There is no single answer that stands out.
Most have said they had a lot of fear and hesitancy, but they came up with various tools to work past that. Learning that they were scared too has been very helpful to us. We know the fear is normal and our commitment needs to push us past that fear.
But how did they know when they were ready? We had a harder time finding an answer to that as everyone had their own timeline driven by various events in their lives.
So we came up with seven questions that we asked ourselves to determine “when” was the right time, and answered a lot of the “How” pieces of the puzzle for us. We won’t give you our answers as this is very personal to each potential full timer. We hope they will help you to know your own timeline.
Here are the 7 questions we asked ourselves:
1. What will our source of funding/income be when we move into the RV?
2. Will Your Income Continue Without Additional Stress When You “Hit The Road”?
3. If You Are Beginning This Adventure As A Couple & Only One Of You Will Work On The Road Will That Cause Friction & Disappointment?
4. Will Your Expenses Increase Or Decrease When You Become Nomads? Budget For The Following:
- Will You Boondock or Stay In RV Parks? Obtain Membership in Harvest Host? Passport America/ Thousand Trails?
- Fuel Costs? Will You Stay In One Place Long or Will You Be On The Move Often?
- Grocery Costs. Do You Have The Space To Stock Up Where Groceries Are Less Expensive? Or Are You At The Mercy Of Food Costs Going Up and Down Depending On Where You Will Have To Shop?
- If You Keep Your Home Will You Have to Keep Utilities On For Extreme Weather, Water For Yard Maintenance, Alarm Systems?
- How Much Will You Pay For Fuel and Electricity On The Road? Solar For Boondocking? Also, Long Term RV Park Stays Often Add Utility Costs
5. If You Keep Your Property, How Will You Maintain & Secure It? Yard Maintenance? Security System?
6. If You Sell Your Home (Sticks & Bricks), Will You Want To Keep Your Options Open To Return To Home Ownership?
- Will You Set Aside Funds To Do This?
- Will You Be Able To Qualify For a Mortgage When You Wish To Be A Property Owner Again?
If You Face A Serious Illness or Debilitating Injury What Is Your Plan?
- Will You Want To Continue Your Nomad Life?
- Will You Want To Have A Home Base?
- Will Friends Or Family Allow You To Either Stay With Them If You Need Help?
- Or Will You Find A Long Term RV Park To Stay In While You Recover?
These are the questions we answered to know what is the right way for us to approach this new to us lifestyle. We don’t know what to expect, but we hope we know how we will deal with unexpected issues.
Knoowing this beforehand will also contribute to a successful and enjoyable life change. We are excited and scared to leap into our RV life plan this summer. There is so much to do to get ready, but it can’t get here soon enough.
Just wanted to wish you a Happy Easter
God bless and safe travels,
Russ
